This is what Nokia said about their commitment to their people and their Blueprint for Success coaching experience

July 2008

NOKIA – Continuous Coaching for its People

Nokia Australia has a renowned reputation as an ‘employer of choice’ built on its strong commitment to looking after its people.

“People want to come and work at Nokia. And once they join us - they stay,” says Jodi Sampson, Head of Human Resources, Nokia Australia and New Zealand.  “For us, our culture and values are more than just a kitchen poster.”

“We really do ‘invest’ in our people,” she said.  “We have a large number of programs for our employees ranging for a health and well being program, professional development and training, a score of benefits from gym to finance counseling.

Our people are our bottom line.  Their success and fulfilment are at the heart of our company’s ongoing success and our job is to encourage them to continue to do their best in a comfortable, professional, flexible and values-driven environment.

Ms Sampson said that Nokia Australia is always looking for new opportunites to be relevant to our team members.

“We have long had a professional confidential counseling program which is available to all employees; however we recently worked with Executive Coach, Sally Jacobs, from Blueprint for Success on a more developed program for our people.

“What started out as a guest speaker spot at one of our employee events, turned into a six month program of tailored workshops designed to support our team with a range of leadership and management issues.”

“Now don’t get me wrong,” Ms Sampson was keen to explain, “We have some exceptional leaders and our team are high achieving professionals with excellent communication skills, but even when you work with the best, there is always an opportunity for learning and growth,” she said.

“In particular we wanted focus on our line managers, those that actually manage people, to ensure that we gave them all the skills to help the effectively manage their team members.

It is very easy to just fill out the HR forms once a quarter and score your employees, it is quite a different thing to work consistently and regularly with your team members and coach and guide them to exceptional performance and to proactively manage any performance issues as they arise, when they arise in a proactive manner.

The Science of Success

Nokia - Continuous Coaching for its People

“Companies can often make the mistake of taking good technically competent people and then promote them to a management role where they suddenly have to manage a range of people without giving them any training and support in how to effectively do so.

People management is a life long learning skill.

At Nokia we want to support our line managers from the very beginning and do more than just give them a set of forms to fill out.

This is where the workshops with Sally become very useful and important.

“We covered issues such as active listening, management by encouragement, coaching skills, giving feedback in a postive way, and how to deal with conflict.  We also worked with the leaders on issues that they face".

“The great thing about working with Sally is that we didn’t get stock standard presentations and workshops.

She took the time to really learn about our company, to meet the people and really understand at a minute level the issues.

Each workshop she did was tailored specificially to our team and its needs.

Flexibility was also important for Nokia, said Ms Sampson. “Our team is too busy to take a half day here or attend a full workshop there. Sally was willing and flexible enough to work with this and we designed the modules to allow for the fact that the team mix would change. We developed a series of breakfast workshops and we held once a month, so that learnings from one workshop could be rolled into the next.

According to Sally, “This takes more time and effort but it is infinitely more rewarding as you see invividuals grab onto things that are relevant and useful to them. I really enjoy working with companies like Nokia who are committed to supporting their people.”

According to Ms Sampson, “Working with an external executive coach provided a range of benefits to Nokia and its team.  We were able to develop our leaders and managers on a group as well as individual levels.

The workshops helped to open up a more detailed dialogue on what it means to lead and gave us a more solid and practical grounding in the actual skills.  We could also focus on individual needs with one-on-one coaching and this proved invaluable for our team members.”
