NOKIA – Continuous Coaching for its People
Nokia Australia has a renowned reputation as an ‘employer of choice’ built on its strong commitment to looking after its people.
“People want to come and work at Nokia. And once they join us - they stay,” says Jodi Sampson, Head of Human Resources, Nokia Australia and New Zealand. “For us, our culture and values are more than just a kitchen poster.”
“We really do ‘invest’ in our people,” she said. “We have a large number of programs for our employees ranging for a health and well being program, professional development and training, a score of benefits from gym to finance counseling.
Our people are our bottom line. Their success and fulfilment are at the heart of our company’s ongoing success and our job is to encourage them to continue to do their best in a comfortable, professional, flexible and values-driven environment.
Ms Sampson said that Nokia Australia is always looking for new opportunites to be relevant to our team members.
“We have long had a professional confidential counseling program which is available to all employees; however we recently worked with Executive Coach, Sally Jacobs, from Blueprint for Success on a more developed program for our people.
“What started out as a guest speaker spot at one of our employee events, turned into a six month program of tailored workshops designed to support our team with a range of leadership and management issues.”
“Now don’t get me wrong,” Ms Sampson was keen to explain, “We have some exceptional leaders and our team are high achieving professionals with excellent communication skills, but even when you work with the best, there is always an opportunity for learning and growth,” she said.
“In particular we wanted focus on our line managers, those that actually manage people, to ensure that we gave them all the skills to help the effectively manage their team members.
It is very easy to just fill out the HR forms once a quarter and score your employees, it is quite a different thing to work consistently and regularly with your team members and coach and guide them to exceptional performance and to proactively manage any performance issues as they arise, when they arise in a proactive manner.
